Affordable Housing

Let's be honest; the affordable housing industry is a complicate one! This is, of course, due to the bureaucracy that is common in any government program. The original program created by Congress is amended, tweaked, partially repealed, expanded, etc. so many times that it is barely recognizable. And then each new administration that comes along makes its own set of new rules. Along the way multiple new agencies are formed, each with its own regulations and demands. This never ending bureaucracy seems to change its rules from week to week and it is a full time job just to keep up with them.

Owners and managers often find themselves spending all of their resources dealing with this never-ending compliance, and their primary customers - the tenants- are left by the wayside. When all of your resources are spent on getting a passing score on the REAC inspection, it is hard to spend time and money on services for your tenants. This leads to a lose-lose situation that leaves everyone involved feeling badly.

The purpose of this blog is to provide information and updates to anyone who is currently or will potentially be part of the affordable housing industry. We hope that we can publish interesting articles that will help ease your way through this often complex world.

Just a small point about our style. Once in a while we may come across as a bit cynical and sarcastic in our posts. The truth is that you can not work in this industry without becoming a little cynical. And writing about it in what we hope is a humorous way is our way of trying to make this fun. Dealing with the affordable housing agencies can sometime be infuriating - so here at ARO we hope to give voice to those frustrations while maintaining our sense of humor. Of course we hope to provide concrete and practical ways to navigate through the muddled waters as well.
